This net gain, which represents a whopping 2% of the state's total population, stands head and shoulders above the rest, with Tasmania following closely behind with over 15,000 and the Australian Capital Territory attracting more than 10,000 new residents.
However, not all states are seeing growth. New South Wales is experiencing the largest net loss, with over 102,000 people leaving for greener pastures. Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory are also losing residents, with losses of 10,000, 1,618, 6,711, and 13,435 respectively.
Census program manager Mark Harding highlights that the majority of Australians did not move at all in the five years leading up to the 2021 national survey. Nevertheless, the census data provides valuable insight into the characteristics and motivations of those who did decide to make a change.
